| In the Intermediate level, from the branches grow the leaves. Nourishment (pranayama) is drawn by the leaves and flows in the sap, protected by the bark, to feed the root and the inner parts of the whole tree. The bark protects the energy flowing inside the tree (yoga aspirant) between the roots and the leaves. The sap of the tree is the juice which carries the life force on this inward journey. In the tree, the energy flows from the root to the leaves, and reverse journey through the branches and the trunk to the root, and the root makes the tree grow further to produce the flowers and fruits.
The intermediate level asanas are reasonably difficult and are recommended for people who can perform the beginner’s group without discomfort or strain. These asanas require a greater degree of steadiness, concentration and coordination with breath. On the practical level, it involves the development and control of the mind through the mastery and refinement of the breath (pranayama), and through the practice of stilling the senses (pratyahara). Included in this level are the padmasana, backward and forward bending, spinal twisting, balancing and inversions.
This level of practice adds a further dimension to your yoga practice and is essential for those who wish to proceed deeper. The body and mind attain a state of quietness, and the boundary is crossed between physical practice of yoga and practice with understanding. In this way, a spiritual awareness is acquired.
